Sharper TV Slideshows: Introducing Play Directly on TV

A new playback option gives your photos the clearest possible route to the big screen—without taking away the familiar mode that already works with more TVs.

Photos contain a lot of fine detail: individual leaves, strands of hair, fabric texture, distant buildings, and smooth colour gradients. When a slideshow is turned into a live video stream, some of that detail can be softened or replaced by visible compression blocks—especially when the network is busy.

That is why PictaCast now gives you a choice. You can continue using the familiar Stream from this device mode, or choose the new Play directly on TV mode for the best picture quality on compatible TVs.

Two ways to reach your TV

Stream from this device

Your phone or computer prepares the slideshow and streams it to the TV. It offers the broadest compatibility and keeps demanding visual effects on the more powerful device, but picture quality can be affected by video compression and network conditions.

Play directly on TV

PictaCast sends the photos to the TV, where the slideshow is rendered directly. This avoids turning the whole slideshow into a compressed video stream, preserving clean edges, smooth gradients, and more of the detail in every image.

Modern TVs generally handle direct playback smoothly. Some older models have slower processors, so demanding modes such as Filmstrip or Scrapbook may feel less fluid when rendered on the TV itself. That is exactly why both choices remain available.

How to switch playback modes

  1. Open PictaCast and select Advanced Settings.
  2. Find the TV playback section.
  3. Choose Stream from this device or Play directly on TV.
  4. Save your settings, then connect to your TV as usual.
